The DIY Kyoto Wattson is a top spec unit that lets you see at a glance how much power you are consuming, it even glows different colours as your usage increases.

Some of the major features of the Wattson are

Intelligent colour display – wattson learns your normal power usage, and shows how you are doing at any time compared to your average. At your average power, wattson glows purple (50:50 red:blue). As your usage increases, wattson gets redder and redder, and as it goes down it gets bluer and bluer. Any time it’s glowing blue you know you’re saving cash as you’re bringing your average down. Simple and visual enough that kids understand it and want to get involved, this visual feedback gives real motivation to keep using less and less and lets you feel good about it.

£ per year display – very simple and effective way of understanding how much power is being used in a context that is relevant – wattson shows what your bill would be if you left everything exactly the same for a whole year (based on either a default cost of power or the exact tariff the user can enter). This gives numbers that have meaning in the real-world for everyone, for example turning on a 100W bulb would see it jump by around £120 a year, whereas a low energy bulb would only make it jump by £25. This also works very well with kids.

Holmes software – wattson links to your computer via USB into the holmes software that can be downloaded free of charge. Holmes gives very visual graphical feedback, visible in great detail down to 5 min intervals or as an overview by day or month. Holmes also lets the user set the tariffs and the usage data can be exported as a csv file.

Wattson will work with  home-generation equipment like solar panels or a wind turbine by showing you  how much power you are generating as well as how much you are using – with very visual feedback if you are ever able to generate power more than you are using - the colours start to glow orange.
